Parabuntal hats are becoming increasingly rare; only a few companies make them anymore, and even used or vintage examples are hard to come by. Parabuntal hats are made from an Asian straw, very thin and typically in an extremely fine weave, similar to a Montecristi Panama hat of equivalent or even higher price. The result is very light, probably not as protective as other straws, but definitely better than something with an even more open weave, like twisted seagrass. It has an unusual, almost shiny appearance that combined with the fine weave, looks like nothing else. If you want a hat no one else has, parabuntal is a great choice.

The problem is that the resulting material is very stiff. Unless you are getting a bespoke hat conformed to your exact head shape, you're not going to have the options of round oval, long oval, extra-long oval, that were available in the past. I have a long oval shape, and it's usually not a problem, since Panama straw and felt hats are typically soft and flexible enough to conform to my head as long as the hat is the correct size. Because parabuntal is so stiff, if it doesn't fit perfectly, the brim is going to take on a deformed shape as the hat bends to accommodate your head. One solution is to go one size up, but that may not work either as the hat will have extra space on the sides of your head. You could send it to a company like Optimo for blocking, which will add $70 to $90 to the cost - a depressing prospect for a new hat of this price that should fit right out of the box. The extreme stiffness also means that it's easy to damage if you bump into anything, and the edge of the brim could take someone's eye out.

As long as it fits, none of this will make any difference, if you're willing to pay attention on the bus and in elevators.
